Edinburgh's business hotspots
30th April 2007
New research from the Vodafone UK Working Nation series reveals
a seven point blueprint for prospering in the face of increased
competition – and the research goes further to show that the
blueprint is epitomised by small growing businesses in the city of
Edinburgh.
Across the UK, Edinburgh was found to have the highest
proportion of people working for successful businesses, with
respondents 25 per cent more likely to work for a growing business
than the national average (76 per cent compared with 61 per cent).
Edinburgh’s employees are also among the most satisfied in the UK –
55 per cent of employees say they are satisfied or very satisfied
in their current role, and 61 per cent say their company has lower
than average staff turnover.
The happiest people currently at work in the UK – the people
that manage and work for the UK’s most successful companies* - say
that their places of work are commonly adhering to seven clear
principles:
- Lead, don’t follow
- Take risks, don’t be cautious
- Innovate
- Diversify
- Keep a clear single identity
- Adopt new technologies and ideas early
- Follow a long term strategy.
The strongest exponents of the seven traits were found to be
small businesses that have been trading for four to five years and
have between 10-50 employees. They are also from Scotland.
Regionally, Edinburgh is the hotspot of business success, with
respondents from the Scottish capital 25% more likely to work for a
growing company than the national average.
