Striving for Excellence as Edinburgh is awarded European City
of the Year
20th November 2006
At an awards ceremony in London earlier this month Edinburgh was
named the prestigious honour of being named the European City of
the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.
The Urbanism Awards 2006 has been run on the model of The Oscars
and has five awards categories - The European City of the Year, The
Great Town, The Great Neighbourhood, The Great Street and The Great
Place.
Each of the three shortlisted nominations in each Award Category
was supported by a Regional Support Team who participated in the
facilitation and delivery of material for two publications - Space
Place Life (a book comprising Ian McMillan's poems on each of the
15 shortlisted nominations and another with RIBA Publications (The
Monograph), due to be published in May 2007 and launched at Dublin
Castle on 24 May 2007.
One of the major aims of The Academy of Urbanism is to identify
and promote best practice in Urbanism throughout Great Britain and
Ireland. Through The Urbanism Awards, the Academy is creating a
body of evidence-based best practice at the level of The City, The
Town, The Neighbourhood, The Street and The Place, which will then
be used in the teaching and understanding of urbanism.
