Edinburgh Inspiring Capital Warmly Welcomes 2006!
6th January 2006
Edinburgh has retainined its prestigious, world-wide reputation
as the home of Hogmanay, with the Hogmanay festivities and the
Royal Bank Street Party being heralded as another major
success!
An estimated 100,000 revellers celebrated the New Year at The
Royal Bank Street Party, Concert in the Gardens and Ceilidh in the
Gardens where party-goers from far and wide enjoyed top class music
and entertainment across six stages.
In East Princes Street Gardens and The Mound Square, the first
ever Ceilidh in the Gardens saw around 4,000 revellers enjoying
Scottish roots artists, as well as fun on the Edinburgh Wheel and
Carousel.
The Catalonian theme of this year's Edinburgh's Hogmanay
continued with Catalonian music and dance on the Urban Dance stage.
This followed the Catalonian wicker bull at the Torchlight
Procession and the Night Afore International carnival where
Caledonia met Catalonia.
At midnight, the Seven Hills Fireworks provided a stunning
spectacle to welcome in 2006.
Edinburgh's Lord Provost Lesley Hinds said, "Edinburgh's
Hogmanay celebrations are internationally renowned and this year
this 'inspiring capital' really showed the world how to party".
"Celebrations leading to 2006 were once again highly successful.
There was a great atmosphere, the Street Party seemed fuller than
ever and the firework display was absolutely fantastic. I was so
proud to be the Lord Provost of Edinburgh this evening."
