Concorde Experience Soars onto Gulbenkian Longlist
16th February 2006
An inspirational museum in the Edinburgh city region has been
longlisted for the Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries.
The Concorde Experience is based at the Museum of Flight in East
Lothian. Since it opened to the public in March 2005, visitor
numbers to the museum have trebled.
On boarding Concorde, visitors can see the cockpit and
experience the luxury once enjoyed by transatlantic travellers. An
audio guide from a former Concorde pilot tells the story of
supersonic flight. They can also learn about the plane’s epic
journey by road and sea to reach the Museum of Flight.
Ailsa Falconer, Brand Project Manager, said, "The Inspiring
Capital is proud of its status as a world influencer in science and
technology. It is great that a museum celebrating one of
Edinburgh’s iconic inventions is based in the region. Being
longlisted by the Gulbenkian Prize recognises the achievement of
the Concorde Experience in communicating the excitement of this
invention to residents and visitors."
The Gulbenkian Prize is Britain’s biggest single arts prize. It
is a £100,000 award given annually to one museum or gallery in the
UK. The four shortlisted museums for the 2006 prize will be
announced in April. The winner will be announced on Thursday 25 May
at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London during
Museum and Galleries Month 2006.
