Inspiring Capital Taxis at Edinburgh Cavalcade

At the 30th Edinburgh Cavalcade, the Edinburgh’s
Inspiring Capital taxis took part in the vibrant and fun parade
which kicks off the worlds largest arts Festival in the
world!
The four fully liveried taxis boast interesting facts that
show how Edinburgh has made a distinctive mark on the world
yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The red cab focuses on architecture, stating how self-taught
architect George Meikle Kemp designed the Scott Monument in
1840-1846. The creative vision of architects Enric
Miralles and RMJM Scotland, The Scottish Parliament, which opened
on the 4 October 2004, also features.
The blue and purple cabs reflect Edinburgh’s creative,
imaginative and vibrant cultural and inventive
successes.
One of Edinburgh’s most well known writers and characters
features on the side of the purple literary cab. Robert Louis
Stevenson was born in 1850 at 8 Howard Place in Edinburgh
and wrote his most famous novel in 1886 - the Strange
Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
The Brand logo features the Edinburgh lines of influence and
in the area of invention the Edinburgh City Region has indeed been
a world influencer. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of
the telephone, was born in Edinburgh. He patented the telephone in
1876 and now there are more than 500 million of them spanning the
globe. He revolutionised world communications.
The orange cab is reflective of the scientific influence
of Edinburgh and features Charles Darwin, who studied medicine at
Edinburgh University 1825-1827 and proposed the theory of
evolution. This cab states how Edinburgh physician, James Simpson,
pioneered and first used anaesthetics in 1847. More recently
the lines of Edinburgh’s influence can be seen in the area of
modern genetics with Dolly the Sheep, being cloned and born 5th
July 1996, at the Roslin Institute, in Midlothian.
Edinburgh City Region Brand balloons, beads and goodies were
given out en route and over 3000 participants from Festivals,
Fringe shows, Community Groups, Commercial floats and bands from
all over the world with over 150,000 spectators watched this
fantastic event and enjoyed the Sunday sunshine.
