Transcript for the Edinburgh Inspiring Capital DVD – INVEST
chapter
Graphic of Edinburgh skyline merges into Edinburgh Inspiring
Capital sparkling logo. The graphic is set against a green
background.
Logo fades out as the background is replaced by a moving image
of Edinburgh. The aerial shot shows traffic moving across a bridge
above Waverley station. As the shot pans out you can see more of
the background - you can see the greenery of Princes Street Gardens
and Edinburgh Castle. When fully zoomed out the image is one of
Edinburgh’s skyline - the city centre of Edinburgh.
The shot changes to display a modern sculpture in the centre
background of the shot. The sculpture is metallic silver and is egg
timer shaped (This is the new air traffic control tower at
Edinburgh airport). A Green text bar is displayed on the screen.
The text says “An ‘ideopolis’ – leading the world’s ideas.” In the
foreground trees blow in the wind. The text bar remains on screen
for the next shot. An aerial view of a 4 lane road. A blue
motorway sign is visible but you cannot see the text displayed on
it. Cars move along the lanes from the left and the
right of the screen.
The text bar remains on screen for the next shot - the Forth
Rail Bridge. A train moves across the bridge travelling from the
centre to the left hand side of the screen.
The text bar remains on screen for the next shot – cars traverse
over the Forth Road Bridge. Traffic moves from the foreground of
the screen to the background – and vice versa. Buses, cars, lorries
and maintenance vehicles are all present.
The image is replaced with a fast moving blur of blue and purple
– as the shot comes into focus a moving train is present. The train
is travelling through a modern train station which is open to the
elements. The green text bar changes to read “One million+
workforce within one hour’s travel.”
The text bar remains in shot as the image changes to display a
large metallic and brick building in the background. The building
carries text which says “Edinburgh Airport.” The logo for the
airport is also in shot. In the foreground two roads are in shot –
one immediately in front of the airport and one set to the middle
of the shot. A car park also features in the immediate foreground.
The image is shown as a sped up shot to display very fast moving
people and traffic.
The text bar remains in the next shot – a two lane major road
with traffic flowing in both directions. The image is shown as a
sped up shot to display very fast moving traffic. On either side of
the two lane road is greenery – mature trees and bushes and green
fields in the background.
The text bar is apparent at the start of the next shot – two men
walk across a modern metallic silver bridge towards the camera. The
men are wearing light coloured shirts, dark ties and dark coloured
trousers. One man carries folders / files. The other carries an
item of clothing. It is a sunny day. The background of the shot
displays modern architecture. Glass and metal buildings prevail.
The text bar fades out.
The next shot shows a traditional brick building high on a green
hill. The shot pans out to reveal that the building supports five
flags on its roof – including the Scottish flag and the Union Jack.
As the shot pans out more greenery comes in to focus at the foot of
the building. A text green bar fades into shot. The text states
“Home to two of Europe’s top banks.” The text bar remains as the
next shot is displayed - an old pewter looking sign that displays
the text ‘Bank of Scotland.’ Traditional decorative stone work is
evident on the wall to which the sign is affixed.
The text bar remains in shot as the image changes to display a
modern interior of a building. Immediately in the centre of the
shot is a big clear glass panel which reaches from floor to ceiling
on the panel there is a graphic (the logo of Royal Bank of
Scotland). Two formally dressed men are in the background of the
shot, one is seated and one is standing. There are large plants
(trees) in the atrium styled interior. There are a lot of glass
panels and walls in the room. The shot slowly moves from right to
left.
The text bar remains for the next shot. A large white sign is
featured. It has blue text and a logo – the text says “RBS The
Royal Bank of Scotland Group.” The text bar fades from this shot to
leave a clear image of the sign.
The next shot features 3 people in the centre – and in focus.
Two women and one man. The two women are dressed in short sleeved
white shirts and dark coloured skirts. The man wears a white long
sleeved shirt and dark trousers. We see the back of them as they
walk away from the camera. It is a sunny day. In the background of
the shot are a further two people – one woman and one man. Again
you see just the back of them as they walk away from the camera.
Both wear short sleeved shirts. A road is evident in the background
of the shot – you see a vehicle drive past. The shot is framed by
modern looking concrete buildings.
The next shot displays a bike against railings in the immediate
foreground and centre. A grey statue of a man on a horse with two
feet on the ground sits behind this. To the left is a street sign.
Black text on the white background reads “Rutland Court.” Six
people are in shot – five to the right of the screen walking toward
the camera. One further person is in the left background of the
shot. It is a sunny day. The courtyard is flanked on three sides by
a combination of concrete / brick and glass buildings. One sign is
evident on the wall of one of these building. This red sign
features a white logo.
The next shot is a man standing alone on a platform as a train
pulls in the right hand side of the screen. The man holds a
briefcase and carries a rucksack. He is dressed in a dark business
suit. To the left of him is the station building. You can see a
sign for lifts, stairs, footbridge and way out. The background of
the shot features the train tracks running toward the horizon. On
the horizon it is possible to see residential dwellings and high
rolling hills. The hills are irregular in shape and size. It is a
cloudy day but blue sky is evident. As the train stops the man
turns his back to the camera and walks towards the train.
As the next shot is displayed the green text bar fades into
focus. No text is displayed on it yet. The shot pans up towards the
sky and features a modern looking light brick building with a glass
facade. The clouds and blue of the sky are reflected in the glass
panels of the building. The text bar now displays text which says
“The UK’s second largest financial centre”. Whilst the text bar
remains in view the image changes to show a pewter logo / signage
on a light brick building. The text reads ‘Standard Life’. The text
bar and text fades out.
An aerial shot is featured next. The shot pans from right to
left and is sped up – it follows the path of a train moving from
the right hand side of the screen to the left. The shot displays a
variety of scenery - in the background there are fields, hills
and farmlands. In the foreground there are large industrial parks,
residential dwellings and large modern business premises several
storeys high. It is a cloudy day and the shot is quite dark.
The next shots pans from left to right and displays a large and
modern semi circle shaped building, several storeys high. The
building is predominantly made of glass and features lots of
curves. A green text bar fades into shot. The following text
appears ‘46% of Scotland’s financial sector jobs.’ Trees are
evident to the far right of the shot. The text bar and text remains
for the next shot which features a metallic logo on a light brick
wall. The shot zooms out to feature the text and logo for ‘Scottish
Widows.’ A banister is evident under the logo. Above the logo there
is a clear glass window.
The text bar fades out for the next shot. An image of an
ornamental arch – light coloured and featuring images of men – a
cap is being placed on the head of one man. The other men stand in
line or are displayed to look like they are walking away. The shot
pans to the left and a green text bar appears. As we enter the next
shot the following text appears ‘43% of the workforce qualified to
degree level.’ To the centre right of the shot is a mature
gentleman standing in traditional dress. A women walks towards him
wearing a graduation robe. She has her back to the camera. The man
places a large black cap on her head. The scene is similar to that
depicted by the ornamental arch in the previous shot. In the
background stand traditional leather armchairs and someone is
standing clapping their hands, only their hands are in view.
The text bar and text remains in place for the next shot. We now
have a close up of three men – one walks immediately in front of
the camera. They all wear traditional graduation robes in red and
pink. They all wear white suits and dark suits.
The next shot is an aerial shot taken inside a building. The
interior is traditional - dark wood and carpets. A stage is evident
and people in graduation robes can be seen milling around. The shot
is sped up so then the graduation ceremony is shown faster The text
bar and text fades out of the shot.
The next aerial shot features a modern building made out of
modern materials. It stands at the water’s edge. To the right of
the building is a large boat viewed from the bow. A harbour wall is
displayed at the centre front of the shot. Further commercial
buildings are featured to the left of the screen. In the background
there is a high rise building and a skyline featuring a mix of
dwellings. Rolling hills are evident in the far background of the
shot. The shot zooms out and pans to the left to reveal some large
industrial looking apparatus (a crane) and a ship which does not
look completely built.
This shot fades into one of a large red hulled ship. White text
on the side of the ship reads ‘Norman mariner’. The image is a
brief close up before fading into an aerial shot of large
industrial looking buildings – several storeys high and rectangular
in shape. A green text box appears, the white text for which reads
as follows ‘Edinburgh Park – award wining business park.’ The
background of the shot features a skyline – rolling hills to the
back and in the centre a mix of commercial, industrial and
residential dwelling. This shot is faded into one that shows a
concrete monolith to the left of the screen with the words
‘Edinburgh Park’ written down it. Immediately to the right of this
stands a white sign, the text for which says ‘Edinburgh Park. ‘ A Y
shaped graphic of the road is evident on the sign. There are
traffic lights in the background at which a car turns right. Behind
these are large multi storey modern glass and concrete buildings.
It is the entrance to a business park.
The text bar and text remain unchanged in the next shot which
features two large glass fronted buildings. One is rectangular in
shape and the other is a modern circular design. Both are
multi-story. To the front of the buildings there are trees and
shrubs. Reeds lie along the water’s edge immediately in front of
the building.
The text bar and text remain displayed as the shot changes into
a shot of the water’s edge. There is a concrete path by the side of
the waterway upon which people walk in both directions. This path
is aligned by regularly placed trees and between two of
these a black bust / statue is visible. Regularly placed
bollards lie in etween the path and water’s edge. The text
bar fades out.
The next shot is an aerial view featuring a number of large
commercial premises. Two of the buildings are very distinctive
because of their round shape. Around one of these rounded buildings
lies an area of greenery – grass in a circular shape to mirror that
of the building. This is also distinctive because it is the only
open green space in this shot. Cranes are also seen amongst the
commercial landscape. The cityscape stretches out into the
background of the shot. Traffic can be seen moving on the roads.
The shot pans to the left.
The next shot shows a woman walking toward the camera. She is
wearing a white summer sleeveless top and is talking on a mobile
phone. It is a sunny day. In the background people are seen walking
toward the horizon of the shot. The landscape of the shot is
commercial in nature - large multi-storey buildings and a car park
is evident in the background. The buildings are modern in style and
architecture- a mixture of glass and light concrete. There are a
few topiary trees and foliage scattered around the outside of the
buildings and around the car park.
This shot is replaced by a fast panning shot of a waterfront. A
green text bar appears and features the following text ‘Major
development of the waterfront over the next 20 years.’ The
shot moves from right to left and displays an expanse of water
against an urban landscape which is peppered by mature trees.
Residential and commercial property is evident along the water’s
edge. A harbour wall and lighthouse comes into view alongside a
large white multi-storey building.
The text bar and text fades out and is replaced with an image of
the top of a crane set against a blue sky. The shot pans out to
reveal more of the crane.
This shot merges into another waterfront shot displaying
industrial sites and open expanses of land. Modern commercial and
residential property is shown as the shot pans to the left. The
background shows an aerial view of the cityscape and rolling
hills.
The next shot is modern signage on a brick wall with the words
‘BioCampus’. A green text bar appears and displays the following
text ‘A centre for scientific excellence.’ The text bar and
text remains on screen as the shot zooms out at speed and is
replaced with signage on a wall. This sign reads as follows
‘Pentlands Science Park.’ A logo is also shown on the
signage. With the text bar and text still present the shot
moves into an image of a laboratory. A person in a white coat and
plastic gloves moves towards the camera and places an object into a
specialist looking piece of machinery on the left hand side of the
screen. A badge is displayed on the person’s white coat – it says
‘Moredun.’ The background of the shot is framed by the interior of
the lab – swivel chairs and technical equipment are present.
The text and text bar remains unchanged as the next shot is
shown. A woman sitting at a desk is featured. She is in a white lab
coat and is using some specialist hand tool with a long
needle. She is in a lab and is surrounded by specialist
looking equipment. The text bar starts to fade out of the shot as
the next image is displayed – a close up of scientific equipment on
a desk. A long needle can be seen moving over the compartments of
the equipment. A human hand can be seen controlling the needle
device. Test tubes can be seen in the background.
A shot is quickly shown – an aerial view of a site under
construction. A large blue crane is shown in the middle of a
construction site. Two multi-storey buildings are situated next to
the site. A green text bar appears. The following text is displayed
‘£6bn investment creating 64,000 new jobs.’
This shot is replaced with a still image – an artist
impression. The image shows a road flanked to the right hand
side by traditional stone and modern buildings. A cyclist is
displayed peddling away from the camera. The left hand side of the
shot is flanked by mature, tall trees. People are shown to be
walking across and by the side of the road – a mixture of genders
and ages. It is a sunny day. People are dressed appropriately for
the weather. Cars are parked on the road. In the background a
modern glass fronted building is shown as the image zooms in. The
following text is written as signage on this building ‘School of
Informatics.’ The text box fades out as another artists impression
is shown. It shows rolling green fields with a mass of large scale
commercial buildings in the centre of the image. The view is shown
from a vantage point on top of a hill – a section of a brick wall
is shown to the right bottom corner of the image.
The next shot shows two people. The image is taken from above as
the two people converse over a piece of print material. They are
sitting on a seat next to a fish tank. A green text bar appears.
The text says ‘Scotland is the UK’s most entrepreneurial region.’
The text bar remains in shot as the footage alters to
show five people sitting around a wooden table. A sixth person
stands at the front of the room pointing to a television. The image
on the television is that of a young man sitting down. A flat
screen monitor is located on the table.
The text and text bar remain on screen as the footage changes to
show a man sitting in a darkened room at a desk. He has two flat
screen monitors in front of him. He is seen to be operating a
computer mouse. The monitors both show different images. One has
the following text moving on screen ‘small step’ against a moving
backdrop of a galaxy. The other monitor features a static white
screen display with blue text. The text bar and text fades out of
shot.
The next image is one of a portable floor standing sign.
It is red and has white text which says ‘Slow Filming’. The sign is
placed on a pedestrian footpath. In the centre of the shot a man
stands behind the sign. In the background there is a general hub of
activity as people of mixed gender and ages are stood under a open
sided gazebo.
At the start of the next shot a green text bar and text are
faded in. The text reads as follows ‘Premier film-friendly
location.’ The footage itself shows a woman standing on long grass
with a clapperboard. A large camera is in shot to her left. The
camera is hovering just above the grass line. At the forefront of
the shot a man walks by with a baseball cap on, carrying a large
microphone. The woman slams the clapperboard and then walks to the
right of the screen.
The text bar and text remain as the footage changes to display
technical film making equipment. Over 20 people are in the shot
which is taken at the top of a grassy hill; with views of a
cityscape to the rear of the shot. To the right of the screen there
are 5 large stone pillars in old and weathered stone. A blue open
sided gazebo sits next to these pillars. There is a general hub of
activity. One person is seen to operate a very large camera on what
appears to be some kind of conveyor belt equipment. Others stand
and watch. The text and text bar fade out.
The next shot shows a mature gentleman in a dark business suit
walking toward a set of rotating glass doors. He is greeted at the
door by a gentleman in similar attire. As the man enters the doors
the shot changes to show a general hub of activity centred around a
high wooden table. A man is seen talking to a woman,
technical equipment is evident (laptop and printer). A green text
bar with the following text is shown ‘World class conference
destination.’
The text and text bar remain into the next shot – a large hall
with theatre style seating. The majority of the seats are full. The
crowd are facing a stage upon which, to the right hand side there
is a table with three people sitting at it – facing the audience.
There is a lectern to the left hand side of the stage as you face
it. At the lectern stands a gentleman addressing the audience. At
the back of the stage is a very large screen which is projecting
text and logos to the audience. The text cannot be seen clearly.
There are various spotlights on the ceiling of the venue.
The text and text bar remain into the next shot – a general hub
of activity as people greet and talk to one another. The shot is
inside but you cannot ascertain details of the venue from the
footage. People are smiling and walking around.
The text and text bar remain into the next shot – a close up of
a young man reading a large book. The man wears a dark business
suit and contrasting pink tie.
The text and text bar remain into the next shot – an interior
shot of people serving themselves hot drinks from a table upon
which rows of cups are placed. The shot is inside but you
cannot ascertain details of the venue from the footage other than
it has a predominantly royal blue interior and has glass doors in
the background. People mill around in the background.
The text and text bar remain into the next shot – an interior
shot. A close up of a hand clasping a white cup and saucer. A
delegate badge is pinned on the clothing of the person but the text
cannot be seen properly. Gesticulations can be seen to the back of
the shot.
The text bar and text fades out as the next shot is shown. This
footage shows a very modern light coloured building in front of
which is a large modern pond. The building is striking in design
and features a mixture of curves, straight lines and protrusions.
(It is the Scottish Parliament building – the main entrance.)
Traffic moves on the road to the right of the screen.
The shot changes to show an interior view – rows of wooden seats
and tables at which a lot of people sit. The room has a very high
ceiling and is very modern in design. It is predominately a wooden
interior. (It is the main debating chamber of the Scottish
Parliament). There is little movement from the people in
attendance.
The next shot is a close up of some people sitting on the wooden
chairs at rows of wooden desks. There is little movement but a few
people are seen to be talking to their neighbours.
The next shot is in the interior of an office. Desks are
placed in rows and there are a lot of computer monitors, files and
paperwork evident. Colleagues talk to one another and there is a
general hub of activity. A green text bar is displayed with the
following white text ‘ Scotland’s most productive workers.’ The
shot pans to the left before being replaced with footage of five
people sitting outside at a high table and high bar stools. They
converse. The text bar and text remain unchanged.
The next piece of footage shows a light interior to a modern
building. People in business dress walk about in both the
foreground and background of the shot. The footage is sped up so
the people appear to be moving through the interior very quickly.
On the wall there is a large canvas sign. It is partially obscured
from shot and so no meaningful text is in view. The text bar and
text remain unchanged. In the immediate foreground a woman in a red
business suit is seen standing talking to a man in a dark business
suit.
The text bar and text remain unchanged as the next shot is
shown. A woman in a short sleeved white shirt is facing the camera.
She has a pen in her hand and is gesticulating with her
hands. She is speaking to two further people – a man and a
woman – who have their backs to the camera. Bottles sit on the
table. The label ‘Strathmore’ can be seen. The text bar and text
fade out of shot.
The next shot shows a mature man in business dress (a dark suit)
addressing a woman behind a counter. The words ‘Premier Travel Inn’
are displayed behind the women alongside a logo. The shot changes
to a close up shot of a young woman smiling directly into the
camera. She stands next to a purple sign that says Premier Travel
Inn.’
A green text bar fades into the next shot – footage of suited
men exiting a traditional looking building. At the door stands a
man in full Scottish dress. People walk past the front of the
camera. The text says ‘Second fastest growing city in the UK.’ This
text bar and text remains in shot as the footage changes to show a
sign which says ‘Ocean Terminal.’ The signage is shown above a
glass widow. The shot zooms out but nothing additional comes into
view. The shot changes to show an interior of a shopping mall.
Various high street store signs can be seen including ‘tiki café,
zinc bar and grill, Jane Norman, Whittard fine tea and coffee,
Faith and Espirit.’ The text ‘Royal Yacht Britannia’ can also be
seen. People traverse the mall, people of all genders and ages are
shown in the footage. The text and text bar remains unchanged into
the next shot – showing a young woman walking past a shop front.
The shop front carries the sign ‘Louis Vuitton.’
The next shot shows the underneath of the entrance way to Harvey
Nichols. The reflective surface shows people entering and exiting
the store. The building is modern, light and multi-storey with many
large protruding and flat windows. The text and text bar fades out
as the footage changes.
Five men dressed in smart business suits and ties stand
underneath a statue. They are having their photo taken by a sixth
man. A couple sits on a bench nearby, watching.
The next shot shows just the feet of someone stepping off an
ascending escalator. The shoes are black, the person wears black
trousers and carries a black briefcase. The person exits the
escalator and walks toward the camera and out of shot.
The next shot shows five men in casual dress sitting around a
table underneath a dark coloured parasol. They are positioned next
to railings. The parasol has the text ‘Malmaison’ on it. Drinks sit
on the table, including a glass of white wine. They converse with
each other. A lady in a black dress holding a tray approaches the
table and places an item on it. The image fades out as a green
tinted screen shows a picture of a traditional and formal building
with a central dome. The building is elegant in style and has
decorative stone elements on its façade. The image is overlaid with
the words ‘INVENTIVE, VISIONARY, DETERMINED.’ Words appear in that
order and remain on screen. The image in the background
simultaneously fades out a little more. The entire image is then
replaced with a green backdrop over which a graphical image
appears.
