Introductory chapter.
An overview of Edinburgh City Region
The outline of Edinburgh’s skyline is drawn across the
screen.
The skyline merges into the Edinburgh Inspiring Capital
logo.
A map is shown - an aerial view of Europe and Asia, which is
partially covered by clouds. The word EDINBURGH appears from the
right hand side of the screen and zooms in to locate Edinburgh
within the UK on the map.
The map quickly zooms into Scotland and the image is
replaced by footage of Edinburgh Castle. The camera pans from the
right to the left hand side of the screen to reveal Edinburgh
Castle.
Footage of Princes Street, with the Castle in the background and
Calton Hill in the foreground. The footage is dynamic, showing the
traffic moving along Princes Street and North Bridge. The footage
has been sped up (played at high speed) so the traffic appears to
be moving fast.
Aerial footage of the Exchange financial district – looking
towards Standard Life Plaza off Lothian Road.
Dynamic footage of pedestrians walking along Cockburn
Street.
Dynamic footage of the traffic (in particular a bus) moving from
George IV Bridge towards the Mound – Bank of Scotland’s
headquarters.
Dynamic shot of Victoria Street Terrace. The camera shows
waitresses serving drinks to men and a woman sitting outside in the
sunshine enjoying food and drinks.
The National Galleries building is shown from the Mound.
Footage taken from elevated position off the Mound – looking

They are milling around a number of craft stalls. Traffic is active

Castle is the fading sunlight. Four people (men and women) are
shown walking on the top of Calton Hill to the right of the
monument. From this elevated position residential and commercial

are shown in their traditional graduation gowns and robes. All
students are stood and facing towards the stage –visible in the
background of the footage. Standing on the stage facing the
students are 33 adults in formal graduation gowns and robes,
presiding over the ceremony. University of Edinburgh logos are
shown on the two lecterns. The room is dressed in traditional dark
wood and dark red carpets. Footage of students milling around
outside in the sunshine. Males and females converse and smile at
each other. All are wearing traditional graduation gowns and
robes.
Orange city taxi branded in Edinburgh Inspiring Capital logos
and colours is shown driving toward the right hand side of the
screen with a backdrop of Edinburgh Airport terminal building. Four
men are visible in the background. One is sitting – partially
hidden from view by the second man walking along with a pull along
suitcase and two further men observing a document. Two men are
formally dressed (in business suits), two are in casual
clothing.
Dynamic footage through the windows of the Edinburgh
International Conference Centre (EICC), focussing on the ascending
elevator upon which females are stood, conversing with each other.

glass building is shown which is traditional of many botanic
gardens in the UK. A group of adults are visible to the left of the
building, standing on the lawn, pointing. Trees are in the
foreground and background of the footage.
Panoramic footage of the Royal Yacht Britannia on the water.
Ocean Terminal is visible immediately behind the ship and a sign
for Debenhams is shown.
A silver bell with the engraving ER Royal Yacht Britannia.
Concorde is shown inside a hangar. Steps up to the aircraft
feature the wording ‘THE CONCORDE EXPERIENCE.” A few people are
stood underneath the aircraft and the rear of the aircraft stairs.
The man most clearly visible is talking on a mobile phone.
Skyline of Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle is to the left of the
shot and Calton Hill to the right. In the foreground the sun is
shining onto bright green grass and trees. The shot is taken half
way up a hill (Arthurs Seat). The grassy hill and a rock are
immediately visible to the left hand side of the footage, in the
foreground. The footage has been sped up (played at high speed) so
the traffic appears to be moving fast.

This footage merges with an aerial shot of the Forth Road
Bridge. Traffic passes from left to right of the shot travelling
over the bridge. A commercial ship is shown in the background of
the River Forth.

Bass Rock. Footage of a large rock in the middle of choppy
waters. A vast amount of white birds fly around the top of the
rock. A lighthouse features on the right hand side of the rock. A
section of the rock is bathed in sunlight, otherwise the rest of
the shot is in the shade.
Footage of a beach. A woman is shown attending to a young girl
playing in the sand with spades. A young boy is shown on the
water’s edge then running out of shot, seemingly being chased by
another boy – both have toys in their hand. A woman is shown
walking towards the water’s edge.
Golfers on a sunny golf course next to the water’s edge. Dark
waters are shown in the background of the shot.
Footage of three people enjoying watersports. In the background
the coastline is visible – rural scenery or seemingly heather-lands
and hilly grasslands is shown. Close up of one man moving
over the water in a wet suit, holding onto what looks like kite
strings.
One man climbs to the top of a man made climbing wall and
celebrates with a toothy smile directly to the camera. A crowd
cheers on in the background.

One man stands atop of a hill and looks over across the roofs of
commercial and residential buildings. Traffic moves across the

Ariel shot of commercial and residential property. In the centre
of the shot is a large commercial building with cranes visible
within its grounds. Ongoing property development is evident.
Footage is framed by trees in the immediate foreground before
zooming into an outline of Edinburgh’s skyline. In the distance the
silhouette of spires are evident. The building in the foreground of

baseball cap performs in the centre. He is seen throwing in the
last stages of a manoeuvre as he returns himself to his feet and

one.

walks towards a man on his knees. Both wear period costume.

Grey shot. No sunshine evident. Image of an inland waterway
(canal) with modern and traditional property to each side of the
canal.
Footage of waterfront (urban waterfront i.e. canal). The shot is
bathed in dusk sunlight and features to the centre of the screen an
outside bar on an old canal barge. Movement from people is evident
but the people cannot be clearly identified, nor their action due
to the distance of the camera.
Close up. A man in a white shirt and a woman in a white and
black dress are shown sitting outside on metallic furniture talking
to one another. Their body language (i.e. smiles, proximity to each
other and the way the man is leaning into the woman) could indicate
that they are a couple. Soft drinks are on the table.
Close up and pan out shot of a man and a woman sitting outside
on a balcony. Between them is a table with two wine glasses. The
man appears to be eating. The woman is sitting back in the
chair clasping her hands together. The shot suggests that they are
sitting outside their dwelling – a flat.
Silhouette of modern architecture against the backdrop of a
sunset. The shadows of the building reflect in the rippling water –
as does the sunset itself.
Dark shot. A silhouette of an archway / passage. An electric
lantern features to the left of the shot. Through the archway a

signing something and raise their free arms to the sky. A crowd is
evident in the background and Edinburgh Castle is lit up by white
fireworks. A close up shot of white fireworks going off
immediately around Edinburgh Castle, followed by a release of
fireworks from beneath the Castle.

footage bathed in purple light and fireworks. The footage is a shot
of Edinburgh Castle and features fireworks being released around

A brief overlay of people cheering and dancing proceeds the
final shot – a fade to purple and the outline of Edinburgh’s
skyline is drawn across the screen. The skyline merges into
the Edinburgh Inspiring Capital logo.
